Former Oakland A's manager Tony La Russa founded Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) in 1991 after rescuing a stray cat that wandered onto the field during an A's-Yankees game. ARF rescues animals that have run out of time at other Bay Area shelters and never euthanizes them to make room for more animals.

In addition to having dogs and cats for adoption, ARF also has a number of people programs, including several children's programs like Camp ARF.
